The Grass is Always Greener Where the Vacationers Are
We often joke that "the grass is always greener where the vacationers are." Literally. As lawn care professionals, we see to it that their lawns are lush, well-manicured, and picture-perfect while they're away.
One particularly hot summer day, I was mowing the lawn of a client who had just left for a week-long beach vacation. As I maneuvered the mower back and forth, creating those perfect lawn stripes, I couldn't help but imagine myself lounging on a beach chair instead.
When You're Out Enjoying the Sun, We're Out Blocking It With Our Hats
Florida summers in the lawn care business are not for the faint of heart. While many are out enjoying the sun, we're out blocking it with our hats, armed with sunscreen and gallons of water.
I remember one sweltering July afternoon when I was trimming hedges at a client's house. They had just sent me a picture of their family vacation in the Bahamas, thanking us for keeping their lawn in top shape. Just an FYI, I also send pictures to my clients of their homes when they're on vacation so they continue to see the value we provide. As I stood there, drenched in sweat and wrestling with a particularly stubborn holly, I couldn't help but laugh at the contrast. They knew they could count on me to maintain what they own, and that brought me an inner joy.
A Funny Story: Spotting a Client Enjoying Their Vacation
One of the funniest and most memorable moments in my career happened a few summers ago. I was at a client's house, mowing their front lawn, when I noticed a familiar car pulling into the driveway. It was the client, back from their vacation earlier than expected. They rolled down the window and waved enthusiastically, still in their vacation shirts and sunglasses, looking every bit the part of relaxed vacationers.
They stepped out, and after a few minutes of friendly chat, they invited me in for a beer. As I sipped the cool drink, they blessed me with tales of their trip, all while I stood there in my work boots and grass-stained clothes. It was a humorous reminder of the different paths our summer days had taken.
