Lawn Care Confessions Restroom Mishaps from the Field
By Brandon Labonte
Being a lawn care professional means spending long hours outdoors, away from the comforts of modern plumbing. As a result, we've all had our fair share of restroom mishaps and emergency improvisations. Here are some of the most cringe-worthy and hilarious stories from my time in the field, all centered around those unavoidable bathroom breaks.
The Sock Wipe Fiasco
It was a scorching summer afternoon, and I was deep into a large estate job with no restroom in sight. As luck would have it, nature called urgently. Desperation took over, and I found a secluded spot behind some bushes to handle my business. Mid-squat, it dawned on me that I had no toilet paper. Panic set in as I rummaged through my pockets — I would have used a $20 bill if I had it but I came up empty. In a moment of sheer desperation, I removed one of my socks and used it as a makeshift wipe. I buried the evidence under some leaves and resumed work. The moral of the story? Always carry a roll of toilet paper in the truck or baby wipes.
The Sleeve Ripper Incident
One morning, after a hearty breakfast, I found myself in a dire situation at a client's house. The urge hit me suddenly, and I sprinted to a hidden corner behind a shed. Desperation makes for creative solutions, and I ended up ripping the sleeve off my shirt to use as a wipe. Returning to work with one sleeve missing, I had to explain to the client that it was the latest trend in lawn care fashion. Thankfully, they had a good sense of humor about it.
The Gatorade Mix-Up
Every lawn care professional knows the importance of staying hydrated, especially on hot days. I always kept a cooler filled with water and Gatorade to keep me going. One day, after drinking several bottles, I realized I couldn't wait to find a restroom. So, I improvised and used an empty Gatorade bottle. Problem solved, or so I thought. Later, in my rush to clean up, I accidentally placed the used bottle back into the cooler. Lesson learned: Always mark the bottles!
The Wrong Cooler Surprise
On another occasion, I was working with my team on a large property. We had a communal cooler where everyone stored their drinks. One of my well-meaning coworkers, unaware of the contents of a certain bottle, placed it back into the cooler. When break time came around, another coworker reached in and grabbed the bottle. The look on his face when he realized what it was—priceless. After that, we instituted a strict policy: no unmarked bottles in the cooler.
The Bush Pee Predicament
It was a busy day, and I was working on a tight schedule. Mid-morning, nature called, and with no restroom nearby, I opted for a discreet spot behind some thick bushes. Just as I was finishing up, I heard voices—turns out, the bushes were part of a neighbor's garden party area, and I had unwittingly provided entertainment for the guests. Mortified, I made a quick exit, praying no one recognized me. From that day forward, I scouted better locations before answering nature's call.
The Gatorade Bottle Redemption
Years of experience taught me the importance of planning ahead. I always kept an emergency kit in my truck, complete with a roll of toilet paper and a few empty bottles clearly marked for "emergency use only." It felt like a small victory, a redemption of sorts, from the earlier Gatorade mishap. When you're out in the field all day, these little victories are what keep you going.
Working in lawn care is full of unexpected challenges and laugh-out-loud moments. From sock sacrifices to Gatorade mix-ups, restroom mishaps are part and parcel of the job. These experiences not only provide great stories but also teach valuable lessons in preparedness and humility. And always, always mark your bottles!
